Improving your speed: changes to the speed limit

The obvious answer when people ask how they can improve their speeding is, well...just stop putting your foot down. But in some cases, you might find yourself speeding without realising. Happily cruising along, singing to your favourite playlist and then suddenly realising you have no clue what the speed limit for that road is.

That being said, speeding of any kind is illegal. And if you're repeatedly ignoring warnings and breaking the rules of the road it could end in your insurance being cancelled or worse - losing your licence.

So, we all agree speeding is a bad idea? Now let's start with speed awareness.

 

When coming off a motorway, a speed limit reduction is likely. Be vigilant of this as entering a 30mph zone will feel very slow after 70mph.

A speed limit change from high to low, is basically telling you that there could be danger and it's not safe to be driving at your current speed. Often, speed limits are enforced because a collision or incident has happened there already - and so you should never, ever ignore them.

If you're still unsure on speed limits, here's some tips on how to spot them and why they matter:

• 20mph - usually found in town centres, high streets, residential roads and near schools.
• 30mph - you'll see these in built up areas, urban roads and villages. If you can see street lights the chances are you're in a 30mph zone.
• 40mph & 50mph - usually on roads that aren't built-up but aren't appropriate for national speed limit either due to bends and roundabouts.
• 60mph - the national speed limit for single carriageways, which means no central reservation between the lanes.
• 70mph - the national speed limit for dual carriageways (the ones with the central reservations).
