Ugh, the theory test. As if preparing for the practical driving test<\/a> wasn\u2019t pressure enough, you\u2019ll also need to pass the theory test before you can get your full driving licence. To help you achieve top marks, we\u2019ve got 10 top tips for success.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Be prepared:<\/h2>\r\n
    \r\n\t

  1. Book your theory test<\/h3>\r\n\t\t

    It may sound obvious, but you\u2019ll need to book your theory test at one of the 160 test centres nationwide. Visit the official government site<\/a> to find your nearest centre and book your test.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    Make sure you have your provisional licence and a credit or debit card to hand, because it\u2019ll cost around \u00a323.\u00a0<\/blockquote>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t

  2. Hit the books<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\t\t
    \r\n\t\t\t
    \r\n\r\n\t\t\t\t

    During the theory test you\u2019ll be given 50 multiple choice questions<\/strong> from a bank of more than 1000 and you\u2019ll need to get at least 43 correct to pass.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\t

    The good news is that the DVSA (Driving Standards Agency) has produced a theory test handbook which is packed full of useful tips and example questions. Make sure you get your hands on the latest updated copy and take some time to revise.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t

    After 14th April 2020 some changes were made to part of the multiple-choice test. Here's all you need to know<\/a>. <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t

  3. Brush up on your hazard spotting<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    Once you\u2019ve made it through the multiple-choice questions you\u2019ll move on to the hazard perception test. It\u2019s made up of a series of video clips featuring a variety of driving hazards. You can get loads more information on the hazard perception test here<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\t\t

    To make sure you\u2019re fully prepared, visit Drive iQ<\/a> where you can practise scanning the road effectively, identifying distractions and looking out for cyclists with their interactive video clips.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    You should complete at least 20 hours of revision to make sure you are fully prepared for your theory test.\r\n\t\t\t

  4. Put in the hours<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\t

    Yep, when it comes to revising there\u2019s just no substitute for putting the hours in. Your theory test questions will be picked at random, so you need to be confident answering ANY of the questions in the DSA Theory Test Handbook - that\u2019s around 1000 possible questions!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    And don\u2019t forget to practise your hazard perception. You need to get a minimum of 43 out of 50<\/strong> on the multiple choice and 44 out of 75<\/strong> on the hazard perception test to pass.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    Practise answering under pressure by asking friends and family to quiz you, bearing in mind that in the real test you\u2019ll have 57 minutes to answer the 50 questions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\t

  5. Take a mock test<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    Think you\u2019re ready for your theory test? Head over to the government-run Safe Driving for Life website<\/a> and try their mock tests - though they only offer the multiple choice part.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\t

    If your mock test doesn\u2019t go quite as well as you hoped, you can reschedule your theory test up to 3 days<\/strong> before your test date. If you\u2019re not feeling confident of a pass, it\u2019s best to take a rain check and squeeze in some extra revision!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t

    On the day:<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\t

  6. Leave plenty of time<\/h3>\r\n\t\t

    Chances are you\u2019ve not been to the theory test centre before, so leave plenty of time to get there and minimise stress on the day.<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t

  7. Don't forget your provisional licence photocard<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    \r\n\r\n\t\t\t\t

    You must have your photocard driving licence on the day of your theory test. If you forget it, you won\u2019t be able to sit your test and you\u2019ll still have to pay the test fee.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t

  8. Use the practice time<\/h3>\r\n\t\t

    You get 15 minutes<\/strong> before your test to get used to the touch screen and the layout of the questions. Take your time and if something doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s working properly, raise it before your test starts.<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t

  9. Flag tricky questions<\/h3>\r\n\t\t

    In the test you\u2019ll have 57 minutes<\/strong> to answer 50 multiple choice questions<\/strong>. Stuck on a tricky one? Not to worry. Hit the flag button and it\u2019ll mark the question as unanswered, so you can easily go back to it before the end of the test.<\/p>\r\n\t<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t

  10. Take a breather<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\t\t

    You get a 3 minute break<\/strong> between the first and second part of your test. You\u2019re halfway there (YES!) so take a breather, have a quick stretch at the desk and focus on the next part of the test - hazard perception<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t
