I know, because I've done it - and my brain isn't great at life admin.\r\n\r\nSo, to help you on your way, here's a step-by-step list of everything you need to do before you can pootle off into the sunset.\r\n<ol class=\"numbered-large\">\r\n\r\n<li>\r\n<h2>Check the insurance and tax<\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\r\nBefore you start getting excited, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/calculate-vehicle-tax-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">look up how much the car will cost to tax<\/a> and run it through a few quote forms. This will give you an idea of how much you'd be looking at for your cover. You know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/choose-a-type-of-insurance\" title=\"Get a quote\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we do insurance<\/a>, right?<br><br>\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Things to note for getting your quotes:<\/h4><\/li>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Engine size<\/strong> - aim for a 1.2 litre or under<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Model<\/strong> - some models will cost more than others so make sure you know<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Value<\/strong> - putting in what the seller is asking for is OK for now<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Number plate<\/strong> - some quote forms will fill in a lot of information for you if you have this<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"margin-top-10 margin-bottom-20\">Take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/how-is-car-insurance-worked-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how car insurance is worked out<\/a> so you know what to avoid for the best insurance price.<\/blockquote><br>\r\n\r\n<li><h2>Check the logistics<\/h2><\/li>\r\n \t<li>If it's your first car, how are you going to go to see it and then bring it home if you do go through with buying? Make sure that wherever the car lives, you can definitely transport yourself and it.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>If you're still learning to drive, find out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/how-to-buy-a-used-car-when-you-only-have-a-provisional-licence\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to buy a car when you only have a provisional licence<\/a>.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<li><h2>Contact the seller<\/h2><\/li>\r\n\r\n<h4>What to ask:<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Missing information<\/strong> - things like number of previous owners and whether it has a full service history<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Whether the car has ever had any body work done<\/strong> - basically: has it crashed and therefore been weakened?<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>If it has all its documents<\/strong> - <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/what-is-a-log-book\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">V5C (logbook)<\/a>, owner's handbook, receipts for tyres and work<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Whether the car has any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/whats-so-bad-about-car-modifications\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modifications<\/a><\/strong> - things like upgraded stereo systems can affect your insurance<\/li>\r\n \t<li>(If that all goes well) <strong>When you can see it<\/strong> and where it'll be<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"margin-top-10 margin-bottom-20\">Go in with a healthy dose of scepticism. The seller wants to sell; if the information is missing, it's likely your suspicions are correct.<\/blockquote><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><h2>Go check out the car<\/h2><\/li>\r\n\r\nTake a buddy \/ parent if you think they'll be tougher than you (sometimes love can blind us to things like faulty windscreen wipers...). The important thing is not to rush into buying - there will be other cars!If you're pretty sure you want this make and model, take the opportunity to try everything out and make sure it's comfortable. Even if you don't buy THIS car, you'll know now exactly what you're after and have an idea of what it should cost.\r\n<blockquote class=\"margin-top-10 margin-bottom-20\">Use our list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/buying-a-used-car-10-things-to-keep-in-mind\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">everything you need to check when you go to see a used car<\/a>.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<li><h2>Think about it<\/h2><\/li>\r\n\r\nEvery seller is going to tell you they've got other people coming to see it and they need a quick sell. Ignore them.
