Depending on the conviction, this is either:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>4 years from the date of the conviction - if the conviction was for reckless or dangerous driving, or ended up in disqualification<\/li>\r\n<li>4 years from the date of the offence - any situation other than the above<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p>More serious convictions, like <a href=\"\/young-drivers-guide\/what-is-the-penalty-for-drink-driving\/\">drink driving<\/a>, can stay on your licence for up to 11 years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/view-driving-licence\" target=\"_blank\">check online to see if you have any points on your licence<\/a>.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>Is there a way to avoid getting points on my licence?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>If you're caught speeding, you should be given the option to accept the points on your licence and a fine, or attend a speed awareness course, which costs \u00a392. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It's a great course and I've never heard anything but positive stuff about it from attendees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"container-border text-center\"><strong>BUT<\/strong>. If you get a conviction while you're insured, you'll need to tell them what's happened.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>If you don't disclose a conviction to your insurer, it can make your policy invalid. That means if you crashed, you wouldn't be covered. This can stay on your insurance 'record' for life - making it more difficult to get insured in the future.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>What about minor offences?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>There are also traffic offences that don't mean points on your licence. These are:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Penalty Charge Notices<\/strong> for things like parking where you shouldn't or driving in a bus lane during the hours of its operation<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Fixed Penalty Notices<\/strong> for moving offences like driving through a red light<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Notices of Intended Prosecution<\/strong> for offences where you weren't actually stopped, like speeding<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n<p>Although these are technically minor offences, they can turn into serious problems if you don't pay the fine quickly.
