Getting ready<\/h2>\r\n\r\n
It\u2019s very important that before you do your observation and make the decision to move off, you\u2019re actually ready to go.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
There\u2019s no point thinking \u2018Yup, now\u2019s the time\u2019 if you then take 30 seconds to find the biting point and take off your handbrake. A lot can change in 30 seconds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Your preparation process:<\/h3>\r\n\r\n

- Put the key in the ignition and turn until you hear the engine start<\/li>\r\n\t
- Push down on the clutch and put the car in first gear<\/li>\r\n\t
- Raise the clutch to the point that the car growls, then push down a bit - about the thickness of a pound coin<\/li>\r\n\t
- Take off your handbrake but use the foot brake if you don\u2019t feel confident enough to keep the car still with the clutch<\/li>\r\n
- Hold that clutch!<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n
Is it safe?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n
When you\u2019re moving off on a road, the most important thing you need to do is check that it\u2019s safe for you to go.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
This means observing traffic coming from behind you and towards you, and always keeping an eye out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorbikes. <\/p>\r\n\r\n
Use your left mirror: <\/strong>don\u2019t forget to look out for BOBs and GOBs - boys and girls on bikes.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n
Don\u2019t worry if it feels like it takes a while for the road to be safe - it\u2019s always better to be a little cautious than a little risky.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Moving off<\/h2>\r\n\r\n
Keep your clutch exactly where it is, ready to go when it's safe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
When moving off, you should always:<\/h3>\r\n\r\n
- \r\n\t
- Use your mirrors to check the road is clear<\/li>\r\n\t
- Look round to check your blind spots (anywhere not covered by your mirrors)<\/li>\r\n\t
- Signal your intention<\/li>\r\n\t
- Do a final check that it\u2019s safe to go<\/li>\r\n\t
- Press the accelerator gently and steer carefully into the road, keeping to your side<\/li>\r\n\t
- Release the clutch slowly as you accelerate<\/li>\r\n\t
- Make progress so you\u2019re not a hazard, changing to second gear as soon as possible<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n
You\u2019ll probably hear your driving instructor saying \u2018Make progress!\u2019 a lot - it means \u2018Get to the appropriate speed in good time.\u2019 You need to do this after turning into a road, changing gear or anything else that causes you to slow down and therefore affect other road users.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
During your test, your examiner will probably ask you to pull over and then move off again several times. Follow the same process every time and don\u2019t forget your observation!<\/blockquote>\r\n \r\n\r\n
Hill starts<\/h2>\r\n\r\n
Your examiner may also ask you to do a hill start during your test. A hill start might sound harder, but if you use all of the same steps you\u2019ll be just fine. <\/p>\r\n\r\n
Remember:<\/strong> your car could take longer to accelerate when you\u2019re doing a hill start, so make sure you\u2019ve got enough time to safely make progress without being a hazard to other drivers.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n
If you\u2019ve stopped on a hill, hopefully you\u2019ve remembered to use your handbrake. Remember to check you\u2019ve put your car in first gear, then find your biting point. <\/p>\r\n\r\n
Next, take care of all of your checks and gently come off your clutch, pushing on your accelerator as you take off the handbrake. You might need to push on your accelerator a bit harder on a hill start than on flat ground, so don\u2019t be scared to give it some oomph!<\/p>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t
