{"id":1506,"date":"2019-01-10T10:18:43","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T10:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/?p=1506"},"modified":"2019-05-01T12:41:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T11:41:20","slug":"how-to-pass-your-driving-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/how-to-pass-your-driving-test","title":{"rendered":"How to pass your driving test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Passing your driving test isn't the magical signal that you know everything about driving and are 100% ready to rule the road. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Recognising this can actually help you learn and pass because it's all about attitude: if you think you're the best driver that ever lived after 5 lessons...your test might not go so well for you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>To make sure you do your best when it comes to driving test time, take a look through these 6 tips.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"numbered-large\">\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Take enough lessons<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row row-fluid\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-10-12\">\r\n\t\r\n<p class=\"margin-right-20\">You\u2019ve heard it before but I\u2019ll say it again: 47 hours plus around 20 of private practice. That\u2019s the average number of hours with an instructor that it takes to pass, according to the DVSA.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"margin-right-20\">It may seem like taking your test quicker will save you money on driving lessons, but if you fail that\u2019s another \u00a362 and more lessons. A better driver will also save money in the long run with their <a href=\"\/\/www.ingenie.com\/young-drivers-guide\/what-is-a-no-claims-discount\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No Claims Discount<\/a> and lower insurance renewal prices.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-2-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/47-hours-circle.jpg\" alt=\"47 hours plus\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Know the Highway Code<\/h4>\r\n\r\n<p>Many of the rules in the <a href=\"\/\/www.gov.uk\/highway-code\/introduction\" title=\"The Highway Code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Highway Code<\/a> are legal requirements \u2013 so if you display any of the \u2018Must Not\u2019s or fail to show any of the \u2018Must\u2019s, that\u2019s a problem. Being familiar with the legal requirements of any road situation will help you avoid serious faults. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Knowing the Highway Code when you take your driving test will also allow you to make calm, precise decisions under pressure and help you be a better driver in the future.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Get familiar with the area around your test centre<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row row-fluid\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-10-12\">\r\n\t\r\n<p class=\"margin-right-20\">Facing an unfamiliar route during your driving test is not a great start. Use your last couple of driving lessons to practise the roads you may be tested on - your driving instructor might even know from previous students which routes are most likely. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"margin-right-20\">Looking out for things like hills (if there are none, you\u2019re not going to get a hill start are you?), complicated traffic systems and the busyness of the roads will also let you know what kind of situations you may be up against during your test.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-2-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/Get-familiar-with-town-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Get familiar\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Work on the most common driving test faults<\/h4>\r\n\r\n<h5><strong>Observation:<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Not <a href=\"\/young-drivers-guide\/how-to-use-your-mirrors-effectively\/\" title=\"How to use your mirrors effectively\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">checking mirrors<\/a> before reverse parking<\/li>\r\n<li>Not checking mirrors when moving off<\/li>\r\n<li>Lack of proper observation at junctions and roundabouts<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<h5><strong>Awareness:<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Not reacting to what\u2019s in the mirrors<\/li>\r\n<li>Failure to drive to weather or traffic conditions<\/li>\r\n<li>Hesitation at junctions and roundabouts when it is safe to go<\/li>\r\n<li>Failure to drive at the <a href=\"\/young-drivers-guide\/speed-limits-explained\/\" title=\"Speed limits\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appropriate speed<\/a> - whether that\u2019s not making progress after moving off, not adjusting for a bend, or driving too slowly on a main road<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<h5><strong>Signalling:<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<ul><li>Failure to signal<\/li> \r\n<li>Giving a confusing signal<\/li>\r\n<li>Failure to cancel a signal<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<h5><strong>Control:<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Poor hand placement on the steering wheel IF it's affecting your control<\/li>\r\n<li>Steering accuracy for the turn in the road, reversing around a corner and sharp turns<\/li>\r\n<li>Stalling due to poor clutch control and failing to recover quickly and calmly<\/li>\r\n<li>Keeping the clutch down (coasting) on a turn or after changing gears<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p>Even if you think you\u2019ve got these down, practise and then practise again. You\u2019ll be nervous on the day, so you need your body to remember the action instinctively if your brain decides to switch off.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"container-border\">\r\n<h3><strong>Be aware of everyone around you, not just other drivers!<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>Someone told me recently that their son failed his driving test because he approached some <a href=\"\/young-drivers-guide\/how-to-drive-in-floods\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">standing water<\/a> too fast to negotiate oncoming traffic and ended up drenching some pedestrians. The issue was not anticipating the problem and adjusting.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Be prepared<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row row-fluid\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-10-12\">\r\n\t\r\n<p  class=\"margin-right-20\">Get enough sleep the night before your driving test and make sure you eat breakfast. Don\u2019t plan anything else for the day - you don\u2019t want to have to rush or worry about something else you have to get done.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h5 class=\"margin-right-20\"><strong>Important things to remember on the day of your driving test:<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Theory test pass certificate<\/li>\r\n<li>Photocard driving licence<\/li>\r\n<li>Glasses if you need them for driving<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"margin-right-20\">If you don\u2019t bring these, you fail before you\u2019ve even started the engine. Even the glasses: you have 3 attempts at reading a number plate from 20m away and if you can\u2019t, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"margin-right-20\">Another side to being prepared is how you come across. Look tidy, be polite - even if the instructor is made of steel and immune to the usual subconscious decisions humans make about each other, you\u2019ll feel together and responsible.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-2-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/08\/Breakfast-circle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\">\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\r\n<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li><h4>Keep some perspective<\/h4>\r\n\r\n<p>If you usually drive well during a lesson, why shouldn\u2019t you drive well during your test? You know the area, you know the car, and you know what you\u2019ll be tested on.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The only problem is you: your nerves. And why are you nervous? If you\u2019re prepared enough, you\u2019ll pass. If you don\u2019t pass, you weren\u2019t ready. Hakuna matata.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Just remember not to give up after a mistake. You might think you\u2019ve made the worst error ever, but calmly putting it right and carrying on shows you can deal with problems on the road.
