We’ve made getting set up with your ingenie box really simple

An ingenie box is part of your insurance with us, so you can get to the good bit - earning discounts! Depending on the make or model of your car, we’ll either send you a self-fit box or arrange for an engineer to come out to you for a fitted black box.

Whichever box you need, you can start driving right away from your insurance start date.

Self-fit box

Once you’ve bought your insurance we’ll send a self-fit box to you in the post, which will need to be fitted within 10 days. The box will need to be plugged into the OBD port in your car - which sounds way more technical than it actually is!

Just follow these 3 easy steps to get plugged in.

Turn ignition off
1. Turn the ignition off
OBD checker
2. Find your car’s OBD port using our box
Plug OBD in
3. Plug your self-fit box into your OBD port by pressing firmly until the box is securely in place

You’ll get an email to let you know if this was successful and whether we’re receiving data from the box correctly. This may take up to 24 hours - so don’t worry if it doesn’t come through straight away.

If you’ve got a question or you need help plugging in your box just check out our help page.

NCD: If you’ve told us you have a No Claims Discount, we’ll email you separately to send us proof of this. You can just send us a clear photo or scan of the document.

Fitted black box

You’ll need to get your black box fitted in the first 10 days of your insurance. We can fit it wherever you are (work, college, home, the gym) as long as it’s flat and safe.

The black box itself is about the size of a phone and gets fitted out of sight in your car. Our boxes are packed with clever tech that pick up things like your speed, acceleration, braking and cornering using GPS and a high frequency motion sensor.

We then use the data to build up a picture of your driving style and send you driving feedback, working out any discounts you could be on track to earn.

What you'll need for your black box fitting

Identification

Driving licence photocard or pass certificate.

Documents

V5C (logbook) or new keeper's slip for the car.

No Claims

Proof of your No Claims Discount (if you have one).

If you don’t have proof of your No Claims when the engineer comes to fit your black box, you’ll need to email a copy of this to us within a week of your fitting. If you have a self-fit box, you’ll also need to send us a copy of your proof of No Claims.

You can email this to us at service@ingenie-insurance.co.uk.

It’s REALLY important you do because your insurance could be cancelled if we don’t see your NCD proof from your previous insurer.

What happens after you insure with ingenie Young Driver

You can drive right away, (without your ingenie box) and we’ll either email you within 48 hours to set up your box fitting appointment or send your self-fit box to you in the post.

You’ll get another email from us with a link to set up your driver feedback account. That’s where you’ll be able to see how you’re getting on with your driving and how much you’re on track to save.

Once you’ve driven over 40 miles with your ingenie box, you’ll start getting driving feedback - a new set of messages and a driving score every 10 days.
